WHAT IS RADON?

Radon is a naturally-occurring, odorless gas, which is invisible to the naked eye. Radon is a radioactive gas byproduct (Class A carcinogen) of the decay of uranium in Earth’s rock, soil, and water. Radon can be found under the foundations of newly constructed homes as well as, older homes and buildings; on average radon is at an unsafe level in every 1 in 3 homes. Certain areas of the country can produce higher levels based on the type of rock and soil. The EPA considers radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L a health risk and according to the Surgeon General and American Lung Association, radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. When radon gas is inhaled, particles settle in your lungs and begin to decay; as these particles decay, it causes damage to lung tissue.
